At Modern-courts.ca you can play Backgammon online for free. Backgammon is one of the oldest board games in the world and is known and loved by numerous players. Similar to poker, backgammon is a game that has both elements of gambling (in this case dice) and strong strategic elements.

Which stones to move when playing backgammon, when it is worth playing at risk and when it is better to play it safe are questions that a backgammon master can always answer correctly, whereas a beginner relies on the luck of the dice to win.

With our game you can easily play online backgammon for free and practice against a computer or just have a little fun. The HTML5 game runs in every browser and also on the smartphone.

How is backgammon played?

Backgammon is one of the oldest games for two players and has been played by people all over the world for over 5,000 years. In order to win at backgammon, you have to move all your checkers into your own home board and then roll them out. If you want to know how to play backgammon, follow these simple rules.

Backgammon Rules

Let's take a look at the backgammon board.

playing

Backgammon is played on a board consisting of 24 narrow triangles, which are called dots. The triangles alternate in color and are grouped into four quadrants of six triangles each. There are four types of quadrants: the home field and the outfield of the player, as well as the home field and the outfield of the opponent. The intersection of these four quadrants, the center of the board, is separated by a ridge, which is called a bar (English for beam).

"data-src="https://modern-courts.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Backgammon-Spielfeld.jpg " alt="Backgammon playing field" class="lazyload wp-image-9077" data-srcset="https://modern-courts.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Backgammon-Spielfeld.jpg 773w, https://modern-courts.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Backgammon-Spielfeld-300x199.jpg 300w, https://modern-courts.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Backgammon-Spielfeld-768x511.jpg 768w, https://modern-courts.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Backgammon-Spielfeld-24x16.jpg 24w, https://modern-courts.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Backgammon-Spielfeld-36x24.jpg 36w, https://modern-courts.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Backgammon-Spielfeld-48x32.jpg 48w"data-sizes="(max-width: 773px) 100vw, 773px">

The players sit opposite each other on opposite sides of the playing field. Each player's homeboard is located on the right quadrant closest to the player. The home boards are facing each other, as are the outer boards, which are located in the left quadrant.

Each player moves his checkers from the direction of the other player's home board clockwise into his own home board. The triangles are numbered from 1-24 on most backgammon boards, with the 24th point being the farthest point from the player and 1 being the right triangle on the player's home board. Players must move their pieces from opposite sides of the board so that one player's first point is the other player's 24th point, one player's second point is the other player's 23rd point, etc.

Backgammon Line-up

Each player has to put up his 15 stones so that the game can begin. The stones of the players are made of two different colors, traditionally white and red, or white and black, but there may be other colors. To set up the board, each player must put two stones on his 24 point, three stones on his 8 point, five stones on his 13 point and five more stones on his 6 point.

Remember that each player has his own numbering system, so that the stones do not overlap.

In short form:

  • Point 24: 2 stones
  • Point 13: 5 stones
  • Point 8: 3 stones
  • Point 6: 5 stones

This is what the backgammon grid looks like:

Who starts the game?

Throw a dice to see who gets out. The player who rolls the highest number starts. If both players roll the same number, you roll again. The two numbers rolled are considered the first moves for the player with the highest number. For example, if one player rolls a 5 and the other a 2, then the player who rolls the 5 would start and use the 5 and 2 for the first move.

How to move the stones in backgammon?

For each turn, two six-sided dice are thrown. The numbers rolled represent two separate moves. For example, if you roll a 3 and a 5, you can move one stone by three squares and another stone by five squares. Or you can move a stone by 3 squares, and then by 5 more squares.

  • Stones can only be moved to an open point. An open point is any point on the board that is not occupied by two or more opponent's pieces.
  • You can move your stones to a point without stones, a point with one or more of your own stones on it, or a point with exactly one of the opponent's stones.
  • Remember that you must always move your checkers counterclockwise by moving from your opponent's home board to your own home board.

Always remember the direction of the train:

"data-src="https://modern-courts.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Backgammon-Zugrichtung.jpg " alt="Backgammon direction of play" class="lazyload wp-image-9079" data-srcset="https://modern-courts.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Backgammon-Zugrichtung.jpg 800w, https://modern-courts.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Backgammon-Zugrichtung-300x188.jpg 300w, https://modern-courts.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Backgammon-Zugrichtung-768x482.jpg 768w, https://modern-courts.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Backgammon-Zugrichtung-24x15.jpg 24w, https://modern-courts.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Backgammon-Zugrichtung-36x23.jpg 36w, https://modern-courts.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Backgammon-Zugrichtung-48x30.jpg 48w"data-sizes="(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px">

A few hints for the moves at backgammon

  1. You can start your turn with any tile for which a valid move is possible, but it's a good idea to get your tiles out of the opponent's home board as soon as possible.
  2. You only need 2 stones to block a point, but you can have as many stones as you want in a single point.
  3. Remember that you can draw either one stone twice or two stones once. For example, if you roll a 3-2, you can move a stone by 3 points and then by 2 points, as long as it lands on an open point both times. Alternatively, you can move one stone 2 points to an open point and another stone 3 points to an open point.

Special rule for a pasch at backgammon

If you throw a pass at backgammon, i.e. the same numbers twice, you may make a total of four moves. For example, if you throw two threes, you make a total of four moves with three points each.

Train loss

It may happen that in backgammon you can not make a legal move with one of the two numbers thrown, or even with both. In this case, you lose your turn, and it's the opponent's turn.

As a player, you are obliged to make a move if a legal move is possible. For example, if you have thrown a 3 and a 5, but you can only draw a stone with the 3, you have to do the same. After that, he's up against it.

Tip: Protect your stones!

Try to avoid having only one of your stones standing on one point. Such individual stones are called as a blot. These blots are prone to being hit by their player's stones.

Hitting the stones

If one of the stones is hit, then it goes to bar in the middle of the field and must be used in the opponent's home board in the next round.

Info Icons " data-src="https://modern-courts.ca/wp-content/plugins/wpvue-custom-blocks/assets/images/Expert-tip.svg">

Good to know!

Every time a player's stone has been hit and is on the bar, he cannot move his other stones until he has brought the stone back into the game.

Inserting the stones

Beaten stones must be embedded. The task of a player with a stone on the bar is to return this stone to the opponent's home board.

You can put stones in the opponent's home board according to the number of a throw thrown when the field is free. Only after all the stones on the bar are brought back into the game, other stones may be moved.

Removing the stones at backgammon for free

To win the game, you need to be the first to clear or remove all tiles from the board.

Only after a player has placed all his checkers in his own home board, he can begin to remove (or roll out). A player removes a stone by rolling a number corresponding to the point where the stone is located, and then removes this stone from the board. So, if the player rolls a 2, he can remove one stone from points Two.

"data-src="https://modern-courts.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Classic-Backgammon.jpg " alt="Classic Backgammon" class="lazyload wp-image-9080" title="" data-srcset="https://modern-courts.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Classic-Backgammon.jpg 729w, https://modern-courts.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Classic-Backgammon-300x202.jpg 300w, https://modern-courts.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Classic-Backgammon-24x16.jpg 24w, https://modern-courts.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Classic-Backgammon-36x24.jpg 36w, https://modern-courts.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Classic-Backgammon-48x32.jpg 48w"data-sizes="(max-width: 729px) 100vw, 729px">

If there is no stone on the point indicated by the throw, the player must make a legal move with a stone on a higher-valued point. If there are no stones on higher-value points, the player may (and must) remove a stone from the highest point on which one of his stones is located. A player is not obliged to withdraw if he can make another legal move. A player must have all of his active tiles in his home board in order to clear. If a stone is hit during the house roll, the player must return that stone to his home board before he can proceed with the removal. The first player to be the first to remove all fifteen stones wins the game.
